RV size and morphology
RV size assessment combines chamber diameters, RVOT diameters, indexed values, and anterior wall thickness.

Simple approach
Measure chamber dimensions in the focused RV view when possible. Use basal diameter and indexed values for quick size context, and add RVOT measurements when outflow tract size is clinically relevant.
Detailed tutorial
Keep the RV-focused apical four-chamber view centered on the right ventricle. Avoid foreshortening and avoid using an LV-focused four-chamber view for RV size. Record RVOT dimensions from PLAX and PSAX views when pulmonary valve, congenital, or pressure-loading questions are present.
| Group | Measurements |
|---|---|
| Chamber | Minor axis, major axis, basal diameter, indexed basal diameter |
| RVOT | Proximal PLAX, proximal PSAX, distal PSAX |
| Wall | Anterior wall thickness |
Info
Indexed values help when body size is unusual, but should be interpreted with the image plane and the rest of the right-heart assessment.
